The frame must be plumb before hanging — we check it first
Hanging a door in an out-of-plumb frame produces a door that swings open on its own, latches poorly or has an uneven gap on one side. We check frame plumb as the first step — not after the door is already hanging and adjustments are limited.
Hinge mortise depth determines how cleanly a door closes
If hinge mortises are cut too shallow, the door binds on the stop and will not close without force. Too deep and there is a gap on the hinge side. We set mortise depth precisely so the door closes with light pressure and sits flush against the stop all the way around.
Strike plate alignment is the last step — and the one most people skip
A latch that partially catches, catches only when the door is pulled tight or leaves a rattle is almost always a strike plate alignment issue. We chisel the strike plate mortise to match the latch throw exactly — not force the latch into an undersized opening.

What to have ready before we arrive
Three things that prevent delays on door installation day and ensure we can complete the job in one visit.
Have the door in the room before booking
We do not deliver or source doors. The door — pre-hung unit, slab panel or bifold set — must be in the room and accessible before we arrive. We will not be able to complete the job without it.
Know the rough opening size
Measure the opening width and height from stud to stud. Pre-hung doors need a rough opening that is 2 inches wider and 2 inches taller than the door size. If you are not sure, send a photo and we will confirm before you purchase the door.
Have the handle or lockset ready
If you want hardware fitted the same visit — which is almost always the right call — have the handle set and any lockset on site. We drill and install in the same visit so the door is fully functional when we leave.
Tip: Check whether the door is pre-bored (has handle holes) or blank before purchasing. A blank slab with no bore holes is fine — we drill on-site. Just let us know when you book so we have the right tools ready.

A door that swings open on its own has an out-of-plumb frame
When a door does not stay open or swings closed on its own, the frame is out of plumb and the door is hanging in a parallelogram instead of a rectangle. Shimming the frame before hanging is the fix — not adjusting the hinges after the fact. Adjusting hinges on a racked frame just masks the problem temporarily.
Calgary homes built in the 1960s through 1980s commonly have settled foundations that take interior door frames out of plumb over time. We check frame square as the first step — not after the door is already hung and options are limited.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a pre-hung and slab door?
A pre-hung door comes with the frame already attached — the entire unit goes into the rough opening and is shimmed and nailed in place. A slab door is just the door panel with no frame — it is hung on hinges in an existing frame. Pre-hung is used for new openings; slab is used when the existing frame is sound.
Do you supply the door?
No. The customer sources and supplies the door — we install it. This lets you choose the style, species and finish without a markup. Have the door in the room before we arrive.
Can you install a bifold closet door?
Yes. We mount the top track level, install pivot hardware at the floor and hang and adjust the door panels so they fold and slide smoothly. Bifold doors are quoted separately from standard hinged doors because the hardware and adjustment process differs.
What is door shimming?
Shimming is the process of inserting tapered wooden wedges between the door frame and the rough opening framing to make the frame plumb, level and square before it is nailed in place. Without shimming, a frame in a slightly out-of-square opening will cause the door to swing or latch incorrectly.
How long does interior door installation take?
A slab door hung in an existing frame takes about 60–90 minutes including hardware. A pre-hung door in a new opening takes 90–120 minutes with shimming, nailing and hardware. Bifold doors take about 60–90 minutes. Multiple doors in one visit are more efficient per door.
Can you install a barn door?
Yes. We mount the overhead track to a structural header, hang the door panel on the rollers and adjust the clearance. The track must be anchored to solid framing — drywall alone will not support a barn door. We check framing before mounting.
What causes a door to swing open on its own?
When a door swings open or closed on its own, the frame is out of plumb and the door is hanging in a parallelogram rather than a rectangle. Gravity pulls the door toward the low side of the frame. Shimming the frame to plumb before hanging is the fix — not adjusting the hinges after the door is already in.
Do you drill the bore hole for the handle?
Yes. If the slab door does not already have a bore hole for the latch and handle, we drill it on-site with a hole saw. For pre-hung doors, the bore is typically already in the door from the manufacturer. Confirm when you book whether the bore hole is needed.
Can you replace just the door, not the frame?
Yes — this is a slab door replacement. If the existing frame is plumb, square and undamaged, we hang a new slab door in it without touching the frame. We check the frame first because a slab hung in a racked frame will not swing or latch correctly.
What if the rough opening is the wrong size?
Pre-hung doors require a rough opening that is the door width plus 2 inches and the door height plus 2 inches. If the opening is too small, the framing needs to be modified before we can install. We can assess and advise when you send photos of the opening so you know before purchasing the door.
