Why Calgary homeowners book this

Wrong anchor means shelves pull out — sometimes without warning

A plastic expansion anchor rated for 20 lbs holding a shelf with 40 lbs of books will eventually fail. The failure is usually sudden, not gradual. We always stud-mount shelves intended for heavy loads and use the right anchor type for the wall material and load.

Level matters more visually than most people expect

A shelf that's off by even a few millimetres reads as crooked the moment items are placed on it. We use a level in both directions on every shelf and check the spacing against the adjacent shelves before finishing.

Stud vs anchor depends on load, not just position

Studs aren't always where you want the shelf. We advise on whether toggle anchors, snap anchors or stud mounting is the right call for your specific load, then execute cleanly so the wall looks good after.

What is included

  • Locate wall studs with a stud finder
  • Select the appropriate anchor for wall type and load
  • Mark shelf positions at consistent height
  • Drill pilot holes for all brackets or cleats
  • Install brackets, French cleat or hidden shelf rod
  • Check level in both planes before securing
  • Install shelf surface or panel
  • Test load capacity by applying weight
  • Repeat for additional shelves with consistent spacing
  • Advise on load limits for the anchor type used
  • Clean up drill dust and packaging
  • Confirm alignment and finish before leaving

Who books this service

New home moving in

Every room needs storage and the walls are bare. We install the full list in one visit — floating shelves, pantry shelving and garage racks all in one booking.

Need storage in every room

Books, kitchen tools, bathroom items and office supplies all need a home. Wall-mounted shelves are the most efficient storage solution in any room size.

Kitchen floating shelf display

A floating shelf above the counter or beside the window for plants, oils and everyday items. Looks clean, stays accessible and gets things off the counter.

Bathroom storage upgrade

A small floating shelf or two over the toilet or beside the vanity adds practical storage without taking floor space. We anchor it right so it holds towels and toiletries.

Garage organization rack

Wall-mounted shelving and overhead storage racks turn a cluttered garage into usable space. We locate the studs and anchor everything so it holds tools, bins and gear.

Gift installation for someone who just moved

A gift booking for shelf installation is one of the most useful things you can give a new homeowner. We show up and get everything up in one visit.

What to have ready before we arrive

Having a few things sorted before we arrive means the installation goes faster and you get exactly what you planned.

Decide placement and height

Measure the wall space and note the height you want each shelf. If you're installing multiple shelves, decide on the spacing between them — we can advise on standard spacing for the use case.

Have shelves in the room

Make sure all shelves are unboxed and in the room. If the shelf came with specific mounting hardware, leave it in the box so we can confirm what's included before starting.

Know what you're storing

Heavier items like books, appliances or tool collections need stud mounting. Letting us know the load in advance means we arrive with the right hardware and plan the anchor approach before drilling.

Tip: Sending photos of the wall before booking — including a shot showing the wall surface material — helps us confirm we're bringing the right anchors and bits for the job.
★★★★★Google Review

“Installed five floating shelves in the living room. All perfectly level, evenly spaced and the walls look clean. Didn't leave a single screw mark out of place.”

Heavy shelves on the wrong anchors fail without warning

A drywall anchor rated for 20 lbs holding a shelf with 40 lbs of books will eventually fail — and it often fails suddenly, not gradually. The shelf comes off the wall, taking drywall with it. We always stud-mount shelves intended for heavy loads and advise honestly if an anchor type isn't the right choice for the wall or the load.

Garage storage racks that aren't attached to studs or ceiling joists can pull out under seasonal temperature swings. Alberta's temperature range from minus 40 to plus 35 causes fastener fatigue that matters more here than in most Canadian cities. We locate the framing first and anchor into it every time.

Good to know

  • Stud mounting is always preferred over anchors for heavy loads
  • Concrete or tile walls are quoted separately from standard drywall
  • We bring common hardware — have mounting kit if shelf-specific
  • Floating shelf hardware is usually included with the shelf in the box
  • Garage racks take 30–45 minutes longer than standard wall shelves
  • We advise honestly if the wall type limits what's safely possible

Frequently asked questions

What is a floating shelf?

A floating shelf is a wall-mounted shelf with no visible brackets underneath. It attaches to a hidden bracket or rod system that goes into the wall. The shelf slides over the bracket, giving a clean look. The strength comes from the anchor into the wall, not the shelf itself.

Can you mount shelves on tile?

Tile installation is possible but it's quoted separately and takes longer. We use tile-specific drill bits and anchors designed for the material. Send photos and we'll confirm whether it's feasible and what it costs.

How heavy can my shelves be with drywall anchors?

Most drywall anchors are rated 20–50 lbs depending on type. For shelves holding books, heavy decor or kitchen appliances, we recommend stud mounting. We always advise on the right approach based on what you plan to store.

Do you supply the shelves?

We supply common hardware — screws, anchors, brackets. The shelves themselves are customer-supplied. Have them in the room before we arrive. If the shelf requires specific hardware, it usually comes in the box.

What is a French cleat?

A French cleat is a wall-mounting system using two interlocking angled strips — one screwed to the wall, one to the shelf or cabinet. It allows easy repositioning and is very strong when anchored into studs. We use them for heavier shelf runs and garage storage.

How long does shelf installation take?

A single floating shelf takes about 20–30 minutes. A run of 4–6 shelves is typically 1.5–2 hours including layout, levelling and cleanup. Garage storage systems take 2–3 hours depending on scope.

Can you install an IKEA KALLAX or BILLY?

Yes — we assemble and wall-anchor IKEA units as part of furniture assembly and shelf installation. KALLAX and BILLY both have specific anchor points we use to secure them to studs so they meet the safety requirements that come with the product.

What is the difference between stud mounting and anchoring?

Stud mounting means screwing into the wooden framing behind the drywall — the strongest option, rated for hundreds of pounds. Anchoring means using a specialized fastener in the drywall itself, rated for lighter loads. We choose based on what you plan to store and where the studs fall.

Can you install garage ceiling storage?

Yes — overhead garage storage platforms and pulley systems are part of our garage storage scope. We locate the ceiling joists and anchor directly into them. Concrete garage ceilings are quoted separately.

How many shelves can you install in one visit?

A full day visit can typically handle 8–12 standard floating shelves or an equivalent mixed scope of shelves and storage. Send the full list when you request a quote and we'll plan the visit time accordingly.
