Why Calgary homeowners book this

Calgary's freeze-thaw warps door frames every season

The foundation shifts a few millimetres each spring as the ground thaws. Door frames go with it. A door that latched perfectly in October may be binding by May — and the fix is a hinge adjustment, not a new door.

Hinge alignment is the root cause of most sticking doors

The top hinge on almost every sticking door has pulled away from the frame over time. Replacing the short factory screws with 3-inch screws that reach the stud behind the casing is often the entire repair.

A deadbolt that turns hard is a security risk

If you have to lift the door handle to engage the deadbolt, or if the bolt doesn't extend fully, the door is not secure. We align the strike plate and replace worn hardware so the lock operates correctly.

What is included

  • Diagnose cause of sticking — frame, hinge or swollen door
  • Plane or adjust door edge as needed
  • Realign hinge position on door and frame
  • Replace hinge screws with longer ones for better bite into the stud
  • Install customer-supplied deadbolt or handle
  • Test latch alignment with strike plate
  • Adjust or relocate strike plate if needed
  • Check door swing and confirm self-closing where applicable
  • Add weatherstripping on request
  • Test deadbolt full extension and retraction
  • Clean up after work is complete
  • Advise on frame issues that may require carpentry

How to book

1

Send a photo or video

A short clip of the door catching, or a photo of the gap between door and frame, lets us scope the repair before arriving and confirm flat-rate pricing.

2

Confirm and book

We confirm pricing, agree on a time and arrive within the 1–2 day window. No deposit required for standard door and lock repairs.

3

Fixed and tested

The door is adjusted, hardware is installed and every function — open, close, latch, lock — is tested before we leave. No callbacks needed.

Who books this service

Door sticking after winter

Freeze-thaw shifts frames every spring in Calgary. We adjust the hinge, reset the stop strip and confirm the latch catches properly before leaving.

New home lock upgrade

Moving into a resale? We replace all existing deadbolts and handles so only your keys work — faster than re-keying and often cheaper.

Security upgrade before travel

A deadbolt that turns hard or a door that needs a shoulder to close is a security gap. We fix the alignment and replace worn hardware before you leave.

Door swinging open on its own

The hinge is out of plumb or the door stop is set wrong. A quick hinge adjustment and stop repositioning fixes it without touching the door itself.

Rental property lock change

Tenant turnover means replacing deadbolts, not re-keying. We do rental turnovers efficiently — new hardware, tested operation, done same visit.

Smart lock hardware prep

Installing a smart lock yourself but the door alignment is off? We align the door and strike plate first so the lock motor works correctly from day one.

What to have ready before we arrive

A little preparation makes the visit faster and the quote more accurate. Here is what helps most.

Note which door and describe the symptom

Front door, back door or interior? Does it stick in winter only, year-round, or just since a recent reno? A 10-second video of the door catching is more useful than a written description.

Have the replacement hardware ready

If you are upgrading the deadbolt or handle, have it unboxed and nearby. We install customer-supplied hardware — confirm the backset measurement (usually 2-3/8" or 2-3/4") before ordering.

Check if the frame looks out of square

Stand back and look at the gap between the door and the frame from top to bottom. If the gap is wider at the bottom than the top (or vice versa), note it — it changes the diagnosis before we arrive.

Tip: If your exterior door rubs on the top corner on the latch side, the bottom hinge has almost certainly pulled away from the stud. This is the most common door problem in Calgary and it takes under 30 minutes to fix with the right screws.
★★★★★Google Review

“Fixed a door that had been sticking for two winters. Quick visit, adjusted two hinges and added longer screws — it closes perfectly now. Should have called sooner.”

A door that won't latch is a security and energy issue

A sticking door often means the frame has shifted. In Calgary, this happens every spring when freeze-thaw cycles push the foundation. The fix is usually a hinge adjustment — not a new door — and it takes less than an hour when diagnosed correctly.

Exterior doors that rub let cold air in through the gap. Adding weatherstripping after the adjustment keeps the heat in through January and reduces the pressure on your furnace.

Good to know

  • Longer hinge screws are the first fix and often the only one needed
  • We don't plane doors as a first step — it removes material that can't be put back
  • Weatherstripping is a common add-on to any door adjustment visit
  • Deadbolt brand does not affect labour price — Schlage, Weiser and Kwikset all take the same time
  • Severe frame issues may need a carpenter — we'll tell you honestly if that's the case
  • We carry common replacement screws and standard strike plates on every visit

Frequently asked questions

Why does my door stick only in winter?

Calgary's freeze-thaw cycles push the foundation slightly each spring, which shifts the door frame. Wood also swells when it absorbs moisture from snowmelt. The fix is usually a hinge adjustment or longer hinge screws — not a new door.

Can you fix a door without replacing it?

In most cases, yes. Planing is the last resort. We start with hinge alignment, longer screws and strike plate adjustment — these fix the majority of sticking doors without removing material from the door itself.

What causes a door to swing open on its own?

The hinge side of the door frame is out of plumb — the door wants to swing toward the low side. Shimming the middle hinge usually corrects it. If the frame is severely racked, a more involved adjustment is needed.

Do you replace deadbolts?

Yes. We remove the old deadbolt, install the new one, test the throw alignment with the strike plate and confirm full extension before leaving. Bring your own hardware or ask us to source a common brand.

Can you install a handle and deadbolt in the same visit?

Yes — this is one of our most common door visit combinations. Hardware is installed, aligned and tested together so the door operates consistently throughout.

Why won't my deadbolt line up with the strike plate?

The door has dropped or the frame has shifted since the strike plate was installed. We adjust the strike plate position, enlarge the mortise if needed, and confirm the bolt retracts smoothly on every cycle.

Do you adjust garage doors?

We adjust the side-entry door into the garage — the standard hinged door. Overhead garage door spring and opener repairs require a garage door specialist.

What is hinge mortise depth?

The mortise is the routed recess in the door edge and frame where the hinge leaf sits flush. If the mortise is too deep, the door binds on the hinge side. Too shallow and it binds on the latch side. We check mortise depth when diagnosing every sticking door.

Can you fix a pocket door?

We can adjust pocket door rollers and tracks for doors that stick or derail. Full pocket door frame replacements or wall-open track repairs are a larger scope — contact us and we can assess before booking.

Why do longer hinge screws fix sticking doors?

Standard hinge screws are 3/4 inch and only grip the door casing, not the stud behind it. Replacing them with 3-inch screws that reach the stud pulls the hinge leaf tight against the frame and lifts a sagging door — often the only repair needed.

Not satisfied with the work? I will come back and make it right.
