Why more Calgary homeowners are switching to smart locks
Smart locks have come a long way in the last few years. The battery-powered keypad and app-controlled deadbolts available today from Schlage, Kwikset, Yale and August are significantly more reliable than early models — and they install in the same space as a standard deadbolt, with no new wiring, no electrician and no structural changes to the door.
The most common use cases in Calgary are practical ones: Airbnb and rental properties where key handoffs are inconvenient, families who want kids to be able to get inside without a key, homeowners who've lost a key and want to avoid re-keying, and households that want a code for regular visitors (cleaners, dog walkers, family) without duplicating physical keys.
The most common install problem is a door that's slightly out of alignment — the deadbolt throw doesn't retract fully, the lock motor strains and the battery drains fast. We check door alignment before and during install to make sure the smart lock operates correctly, not just installs physically.
