ANSI grades explained

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association (BHMA) set the lock grade standards used across North America, including Alberta. Three grades:

Grade 1 is the minimum recommended standard for any exterior door that is a primary entry point in a Calgary residential home. Budget locksets from big-box stores are often Grade 2 or unmarked — check the packaging for the ANSI/BHMA rating before purchasing.

The single vs. double cylinder decision

A single cylinder deadbolt is keyed on the exterior and has a thumb turn on the interior. This is the standard residential configuration across Calgary — quick to operate from inside without needing a key.

A double cylinder deadbolt requires a key on both sides. These are typically used when:

• There is a glass panel in the door itself (the burglar could break the glass and reach the interior thumb turn)
• There are sidelight windows within reach of the interior handle
• The homeowner wants to prevent children from exiting unattended

Important Alberta consideration:Alberta's building code does not permit double cylinder deadbolts as the sole means of egress from a dwelling. In a fire where the key cannot be quickly located, a double cylinder lock can trap occupants. Most Calgary fire departments and insurance companies recommend against double cylinder deadbolts on primary exit doors.

If you have glass near the door, consider film on the glass to prevent quick breakage or a single cylinder deadbolt with a key-in-knob set that prevents the thumb turn from being visible through the glass — rather than a double cylinder.

Cold-weather lock maintenance for Calgary

Oil-based lubricants (WD-40 is the most commonly misused) are not suitable for door lock cylinders in Calgary. In cold weather, oil becomes viscous and tacky, attracting grit and making the cylinder stiff. In extreme cold, oil-based lubricants can gum the pin stacks inside the cylinder.

The correct lubricant for Calgary door lock cylinders is dry graphite powder or a dry PTFE (Teflon) spray. Both remain functional at -40°C, do not attract debris, and do not freeze. Apply a small amount to the key before inserting it into the cylinder, and work the key in and out to distribute the graphite through the pins. Do this annually — October is the right timing before Calgary's cold season.

For the bolt mechanism and strike plate interface, a light application of silicone spray (not oil) works well and is temperature-stable. For frozen locks (key will not turn at all at -30°C), a commercial lock de-icer (available at Canadian Tire — the tiny squirt-tube products) is the fastest solution.

Installation: what a locksmith does vs. a handyman

A handyman can replace a residential door lock (remove old lockset, install new lockset at the existing hole locations, adjust the strike plate, test operation). A licensed locksmith is required for: cutting new keys, rekeying cylinders (which requires disassembling the cylinder and reordering the pins), and security assessments for commercial property.

Rekeying — changing which key operates an existing cylinder without replacing the hardware — is a locksmith service. This is useful when moving into a new home and wanting to ensure only your keys work in the existing locks, without purchasing new hardware.
