Interior Door Installation in Calgary: Cost, Types and What to Know Before You Buy

Prehung vs. slab: which door type to buy

This is the first decision when replacing an interior door, and it determines the installation process:

Prehung doors

A prehung door comes with the frame (jamb) already attached. The door is hinged onto the jamb at the factory, and hinge mortises are pre-cut. You purchase and install the door and frame as a single unit into the rough opening in the wall.

Prehung is the better choice when:

• The existing frame is damaged, cracked, or has significant paint buildup
• The existing door bound or did not latch properly due to a frame out of square
• The existing hinge positions do not match the new door
• You want the cleanest result — a factory-square frame guarantees the door will operate correctly regardless of what the rough opening looks like

For most Calgary homes built before 1990, prehung is the right call. Calgary's expansive clay soil causes gradual foundation movement that shifts framing over decades. A door frame that has racked slightly out of square will cause any slab door installed in it to bind.

Slab doors

A slab door is the door panel only. It goes into an existing frame — no frame replacement. Hinge mortises must be cut into the slab to match the existing frame's hinge positions, and the latch and strike plate must be bored and installed.

Slab installation is the right choice when:

• The existing frame is in excellent condition, plumb and square
• The old door was damaged but the frame is fine
• You are replacing multiple doors in the same frame size (common during full-home renovations)
• The existing frame is a non-standard size that would be difficult to match with a prehung unit

Door types common in Calgary homes

Hollow-core vs. solid-core

Interior doors are either hollow-core (a cardboard honeycomb core between two thin MDF or wood veneers) or solid-core (solid wood, MDF, or composite filler). Hollow-core doors dominate builder-grade homes because they are cheap and light. Solid-core doors provide significantly better sound reduction — relevant between a bedroom and a bathroom, or a home office and a living space — and resist warping better through Calgary's humidity swings.

In Calgary new builds, hollow-core is standard throughout. Replacing high-traffic or noise-sensitive doors with solid-core is one of the most impactful upgrade decisions in the house.

Bi-fold doors

Common for closets in Calgary homes built in the 1970s through 2000s. The most common problems are: the door jumping off the floor pivot, the top guide rail pulling loose from the header, and the door panels sagging out of alignment. Most of these issues are adjusted rather than requiring full replacement. When bi-fold replacement is needed, the track and pivot hardware are replaced with the new door panels.

Barn doors (bypass sliding)

Barn door hardware has become a popular renovation choice in Calgary open-plan homes. Installing a barn door requires a header track that must be secured into wall studs across the full door width plus clearance on each side. The door panel (typically a slab door on barn door hardware) must be wide enough to cover the opening when closed. We verify stud layout and confirm the hardware can support the panel weight before installation.

Measuring for a new door in Calgary

Wrong measurements are the most common reason for a delayed installation — the door arrives and does not fit. Before purchasing:

1. Measure the existing door (width × height). This is your starting size. Standard residential heights are 80 inches (6'8"); standard widths are 24", 28", 30", 32" and 36".
2. Measure the rough opening (the framed opening in the wall, not the door or frame). A prehung door requires a rough opening 2 inches wider and 2 inches taller than the door size — so a 30" × 80" prehung door needs a 32" × 82" rough opening.
3. Determine swing direction — which side the hinges are on (left-hand or right-hand) and whether it swings into or out of the room. Stand in the doorway facing into the room you are entering: if the door knob is on your right and the door swings toward you, it is a right-hand inswing.
4. Measure door thickness — standard is 1⅜ inch for hollow-core, 1¾ inch for solid-core and exterior doors. The frame and hardware must match.
