Making the most of Calgary's short outdoor season
Calgary's outdoor season runs from roughly late April to mid-October — about 24 weeks. That's not much time, and the transitions at both ends are abrupt. Spring arrives quickly after a long, dry winter, leaving yards full of winter debris, dead plant material and compacted edges. Fall prep needs to happen before the first hard frost — often in September — to protect perennials, clean up beds and store outdoor furniture.
The frustrating reality for many Calgary homeowners is that both transitions happen during the busiest weeks of the year — spring sports, back-to-school, long weekends. The yard gets overlooked until it's either embarrassing or genuinely behind schedule. A single focused yard work visit in May and another in September handles the seasonal transitions properly so the yard doesn't fall behind.
Note on spring booking: Spring cleanup requests come in fast in late April and early May. Book early — spots fill within days of the first warm weekend.
