Gutter Cleaning in Calgary: How Often, What It Costs, and What Happens If You Skip It

Calgary gutters face two threats most Canadian cities do not: cottonwood fluff that packs gutters solid in spring, and ice dam formation from blocked gutters in winter. Skipping gutter cleaning in Calgary is not just cosmetic neglect — it is a direct path to fascia rot, foundation water intrusion, and ice dam damage to the first rows of shingles. Here is the right schedule, what to inspect, and what it costs.

The Calgary gutter cleaning calendar

Calgary's cottonwood and poplar trees release their seed fluff in late May and June. This fluff is hydrophilic — it absorbs moisture and compacts into a dense mat that blocks gutters completely. A home under a cottonwood tree can have its gutters packed solid within a single season if they were not cleaned before fluff season.

The recommended Calgary gutter cleaning schedule:

  • Spring cleaning — late June to early July: After cottonwood season has fully passed. Cleaning in May clears the winter debris but does not address the fluff that falls through June.
  • Fall cleaning — late October to early November: After deciduous trees (elm, ash, linden, Manitoba maple) have finished dropping leaves. Cleaning too early means another wave of leaves falls into clean gutters. Cleaning too late risks the debris freezing in place.

Homes with heavy tree coverage — particularly older SW Calgary neighbourhoods with mature elm canopy — often need three cleanings: spring, mid-summer, and fall.

What blocked gutters cause in Calgary winters

A gutter blocked with wet debris going into winter is a reliable ice dam generator. The sequence:

  1. Wet debris (leaves, cottonwood, shingle grit) sits in the gutter through October and November
  2. With the first sustained freeze, the debris freezes solid along with any standing water in the gutter
  3. Daytime melt from the roof surface has nowhere to drain — the gutter is frozen solid
  4. Meltwater backs up under the first course of shingles and refreezes at night
  5. Ice wedges under the shingles, lifting them and breaking the self-sealing strip bond
  6. Water finds its way through the compromised shingle layer into the roof deck, insulation, and eventually the ceiling

Ice dam repair — removing the ice, drying the damaged area, replacing lifted shingles, and addressing any interior water damage — typically costs $800 to $3,000 depending on the extent. Gutter cleaning twice a year costs a fraction of that.

What to inspect while the ladder is up

Gutter cleaning is the one time per year when someone is at roofline height on every side of the house. Use the opportunity to check:

  • Gutter slope — gutters should slope continuously toward the downspout, roughly 3 to 5 mm per 300 mm of length. Visible sag points that pool water between cleanings indicate hanger bracket failure.
  • Gutter seams — sectional gutters have seams every 3 metres. Separated or rusted seams drip water onto the fascia and wall behind the gutter. They can be re-sealed from the inside with gutter caulk.
  • Fascia board condition — dark staining or softness on the fascia behind the gutter indicates chronic overflow or seam leakage. Fascia rot is expensive to repair; catching it early is cheap.
  • Downspout elbow condition — hailstorms dent and deform elbow joints, restricting flow. Calgary hail is large enough to collapse standard aluminum elbows. Check after any significant storm.
  • Downspout extensions — the downspout discharge point should direct water away from the foundation, not pool against the wall. Extensions (flexible corrugated tubes or rigid aluminum extensions) should place the discharge at least 1.5 metres from the foundation.
