Why Calgary is hard on decks and fences

Alberta's climate puts wood through more stress cycles per year than most parts of Canada. Spring thaw, summer UV exposure, hail impact, autumn moisture and deep freeze in winter all accelerate wood decay and hardware failure. A pressure-treated deck board that looks solid in the spring might be splitting and soft by fall — especially if water has been sitting in any fastener holes.

Calgary also has some of the highest average hail frequency in Canada. A single storm can crack fence boards, dent metal post caps and drive moisture into exposed wood grain. Most hail damage to fences and decks is repairable without replacing entire structures — but it needs to be addressed before the next wet season.

Small deck and fence repairs done in spring or fall are almost always cheaper than waiting. One loose rail post that isn't re-secured becomes three rotted boards and a leaning fence section by the following year.

Repair types we handle most often

Deck board replacement

Individual boards pulled, inspected below for joist condition, and replaced with matching material. Problem fasteners removed and replaced to prevent future movement.

Rail and post repair

Loose posts re-secured with new hardware or post bases. Railing sections rebuilt where the wood has cracked or the balusters have pulled free.

Gate adjustment and hardware

Sagging gates re-hung with turnbuckle anti-sag kits. Hinges, latches and catches replaced where the existing hardware is bent, corroded or undersized.

How a deck or fence repair visit works

1

Walk and assess

We walk the full structure, test boards and rails for movement, probe soft spots and note any issues beyond what was in the photos. Scope is confirmed before any work starts.

2

Replace and secure

Damaged material is removed, sub-structure checked for hidden rot and new boards, hardware or sections installed with appropriate fasteners and treatment for exterior use.

3

Test and tidy

Gate swing, rail stability and board seating all confirmed before cleanup. Old material is stacked neatly for disposal — large volumes may need a separate bin.

Deck & fence repair FAQ

Can you build a new deck or fence from scratch?

New deck builds that require footings, permits and structural framing are outside the scope of this service. We repair and restore existing structures. For new builds, a general contractor or deck specialist is the right fit.

What if there's rot underneath the surface boards?

We probe for soft wood before quoting. Rot that has spread to joists or posts changes the scope — we'll tell you what we find and give you an honest assessment of whether a repair makes sense or whether the structure needs more extensive work.

Can you stain or seal the deck after repairs?

Yes. Staining and sealing can be added to the same visit for accessible deck surfaces. New replacement boards should ideally be left to weather slightly before staining for best adhesion — we'll advise on timing.

How do I know if a deck board needs replacing vs. just re-fastening?

Press down firmly in the centre of the board. If it flexes more than 5mm or feels spongy, replacement is likely needed. If it's solid but just popped up at the end, re-fastening often works. Send a photo and we can usually advise before the visit.

Can you repair composite decking?

Yes, for fastener issues and hardware repairs. Matching composite board material for section replacements depends on availability — some older composite profiles are discontinued. We'll advise before ordering.

When is the best time of year to repair a deck in Calgary?

Spring (May–June) before entertaining season, or early fall (August–September) before frost. Avoid staining in direct summer heat or below 10°C. Structural repairs can be done any time the ground is accessible.
