Diagnosing the problem before calling a handyman

The post setting depth problem in Calgary
The Calgary frost depth is 1.2 metres (approximately 4 feet). The most common fence installation error in the city is setting posts with 600 to 800mm (2 to 2.5 feet) of burial — especially when homeowners DIY fence installation using a hand auger that physically struggles to go deeper in clay.
Posts set above the frost line are pushed upward when the surrounding clay freezes and expands, then settle back — but not quite to the original position — when the clay thaws. After 3 to 5 seasons, the post has ratcheted upward and sideways enough to fail the fence panel it supports.
When resetting a post: the old concrete collar must be fully broken out and the hole cleaned to the full required depth. Adding concrete on top of an intact old collar does not fix the problem — the new concrete will heave on top of the old collar.
Wood species for Calgary fence boards
Calgary's combination of strong summer UV (at 1045m elevation, UV index reaches 9+ in July) and low winter humidity creates accelerated weathering in unsealed wood. At the same time, the dry climate means lumber does not face the same rot risk as in Vancouver or Toronto. The result: Calgary fences fail from UV and checking more than from rot (though rot still occurs at ground contact points).
- Western red cedar: best choice for fence boards — natural oils resist decay, stable in Calgary's humidity swings, weathers to a dignified silver if not stained. More expensive than SPF but lasts 2 to 3 times longer unsealed.
- SPF (spruce-pine-fir): budget option for boards — will check and crack in 3 to 4 seasons without annual sealing; acceptable when cost is the primary constraint and owner commits to maintenance.
- Pressure-treated lumber (posts only): required for posts — UC4B treatment for ground contact in Calgary clay. Never use pressure-treated for boards or rails that will be in close contact with people or pets.
