The practical trigger for starting spring yard work in Calgary is not the calendar — it is the soil. Calgary's clay-dominant soil holds moisture long after snow melts. Walking on saturated clay compacts it, which reduces water infiltration, stunts grass roots and creates hard-baked ruts that persist through summer.

Test the soil before starting any cleanup: press your heel firmly into the lawn. If it sinks more than a centimetre and leaves a clear impression, the soil is still too wet. Wait another week. When the footprint is shallow and the soil feels firm, it is ready.

In Calgary, this window usually falls between late April and mid-May. The last expected frost is typically May 20 to 25, though late frosts into early June occur in years with cold springs. This does not prevent cleanup — raking, edging and debris clearing are fine before the frost date. 1. Remove winter debris
