Why Calgary doors go out of alignment
Door alignment problems in Calgary have two main causes: seasonal wood movement and foundation movement from freeze-thaw cycling.
Calgary's humidity drops from 40–55% in summer to 15–25% in winter. Wood framing loses moisture and shrinks across the grain (horizontally) as the building dries out. The door slab does the same. When the frame and slab shrink at different rates — or when the frame is constrained by the surrounding structure while the slab shrinks freely — the gap geometry changes. A perfectly hung door in August can bind hard in January without anyone touching it.
Calgary's clay-heavy soil also moves seasonally. Clay swells when saturated (spring melt, heavy rain) and shrinks when dry (August, winter). This causes minor foundation movement that gets transmitted up through the framing. Over years, door frames in older Calgary homes rack slightly out of plumb — often only 3–5 mm — but that is enough to change where the door contacts the frame.
The good news: most door problems are fixable by adjusting the hinges or strike plate. Replacing the door is rarely necessary unless the slab itself is warped.
Diagnosing the problem: four door symptoms and their causes

Step 1: Check the hinge screws first
Before doing anything else, open the door halfway and try to lift the latch side. If there is any wobble — up-and-down play or the door slab shifts when you push and pull — a hinge screw is loose or stripped. This is the single most common cause of door problems and the easiest fix.
Go through every hinge screw with a manual screwdriver (not a drill) and tighten firmly. If a screw spins without tightening, the hole is stripped. The fix for a stripped hinge screw hole is one of:
- 3-inch screw method:Replace the short 3/4-inch screw that came with the hinge with a 3-inch #8 screw. The longer screw passes through the jamb and anchors into the stud behind it — which is a completely solid fix that won't strip again.
- Toothpick and glue method: Fill the stripped hole with 3–4 wooden toothpicks and wood glue, let cure 24 hours, trim flush, then re-drive the original screw. Works for the door-side hinge leaf where there is no stud to reach.
On the frame side of the hinges, always use 3-inch screws. Standard door hinge screws are only 3/4-inch long and barely grip the jamb material — they do almost nothing structurally. This is the most common shortcut in builder-grade door installations.
Step 2: Shimming a hinge on the frame side
Shimming a hinge pushes the door slab away from the frame on the hinge side. This rotates the door in the frame and changes where the latch-side edge sits relative to the jamb.
Which hinge to shim for which problem:
- Rubs at top latch corner: Shim the bottom hinge. This pushes the bottom of the door away from the frame, which lifts the top latch corner away from the jamb.
- Rubs at bottom latch corner: Shim the top hinge. This pushes the top of the door away from the frame, dropping the bottom latch corner away from the jamb.
- Large gap at top hinge corner: The top hinge is over-mortised (cut too deep into the jamb). Shimming behind the top hinge frame leaf brings it out.
How to shim: Remove the hinge screws from the frame side of the hinge only (leave the door-side screws in). Cut a piece of thin cardboard — a cereal box is 0.5 mm, which is the right thickness for one shim layer — to exactly the size of the hinge leaf. Slide it behind the hinge leaf and re-drive the screws. Test the door. Add a second layer if needed. Each cardboard shim moves the door approximately 0.5 mm at the shimmed hinge and roughly half that at the opposite corner.
Step 3: Adjusting the strike plate
If the door closes fully but the latch bolt doesn't drop into the strike plate hole cleanly — it catches on the top edge, the bottom edge, or misses entirely — adjust the strike plate rather than the door.
Small misalignment (under 3 mm): Use a metal file to enlarge the strike plate hole in the direction the latch is hitting. File the top of the hole for a latch that hits high, the bottom for a latch that hits low. This is faster than moving the plate and invisible when the door is closed.
Larger misalignment (3 mm or more): Relocate the strike plate. Remove it, chisel the mortise to the new position, fill the old screw holes with toothpicks and glue, re-mortise and reinstall. Touch up with paint if the old mortise position is visible.
Calgary-specific timing note: If the latch barely catches in August but misses completely in January, the frame is racking seasonally with moisture change rather than permanently shifting. Enlarging the strike hole 2–3 mm in each direction gives the latch clearance through the full seasonal range without touching the hinges.
Step 4: Fixing a door that won't stay in position
A door that swings open or drifts shut when left at any angle has a frame that is not plumb on the hinge side. Gravity is doing the work the friction at the hinge stop should be doing.
Bend the hinge barrel method: Remove the hinge pin. Use pliers to bend the pin very slightly — 1–2 degrees — so it has a slight bow. Reinsert the pin. The friction created by the bowed pin against the barrel holds the door at any angle. This is the classic fix for a door that swings open or shut on its own.
Spring hinge replacement: Replace one of the hinges with a spring hinge (same size, available at hardware stores for $8–$18). The spring tension can be adjusted to the desired closing force. Required by Alberta Building Code for fire-rated door openings (most garage-to-house doors in Calgary must have self-closing doors).
Step 5: When to plane the door edge
Planing the door edge is the last resort — after shimming and adjusting, not before. In Calgary, many doors that scrape the floor in June will clear it again in October once the humidity drops and the wood shrinks back. Wait for the seasonal swing before planing.
If the door genuinely scrapes year-round and hinge adjustment has not fixed it, the edge that drags needs to be planed. Mark the contact area with a pencil by closing the door with chalk or paint on the edge, then plane with a hand plane or belt sander set to a fine grit. Remove only what is necessary — 1–2 mm is usually enough. Seal the planed edge with paint or varnish immediately to prevent moisture absorption.
Calgary-specific hinge issue: garage door to house entry door
The door between an attached garage and the house interior in Calgary has additional requirements beyond alignment:
- Must be self-closing: Alberta Building Code requires a self-closing mechanism (spring hinge or door closer) on all garage-to-house openings in residential construction.
- Must be fire-rated: The door slab must be solid core and typically 20-minute fire-rated minimum. If the door was replaced with a hollow-core interior door at some point, that is a code violation and a fire safety issue.
- Freeze-thaw shift: Garage doors are especially susceptible to frame racking because the garage is unheated and the temperature differential between the heated house side and the unheated garage side is extreme. Seasonal adjustment of the strike plate is common in Calgary garages.
Hinge replacement: when adjustment is not enough
Replace hinges when the barrel is worn (pin wobbles side-to-side when the door is open, causing the door to sag), when the leaf is cracked, or when the hinge is badly corroded. Hinges in exterior-adjacent locations — mudrooms, garage entries — can develop surface rust in Calgary's occasional humid summers.
Standard interior door hinges are 3.5 × 3.5-inch for most interior doors and 4 × 4-inch for heavy exterior doors. Match the size exactly when replacing. If upgrading to ball-bearing hinges (which are smoother and last longer), the same footprint fits the existing mortise.
Hinge screw upgrade: the most impactful 5-minute door fix
If you do only one thing from this guide: replace the 3/4-inch hinge screws on the frame side of every door hinge with 3-inch screws. This applies to every hinged door in the house. The longer screws anchor into the stud and dramatically increase the strength of the door-to-frame connection — which prevents sag, reduces binding, and makes the door easier to open and close for years.
Use a manual screwdriver for this (not a drill at high torque) to avoid stripping the new holes in the stud. Turn until snug, not until maximum torque.
