Vanity installation
Replacing a vanity transforms a bathroom more than any other single task. We remove the old unit, disconnect supply lines and P-trap, set the new vanity on level shims, reconnect or replace the supply lines and drain assembly, install the faucet if it comes separately, and seal the perimeter with mould-resistant silicone. Calgary's hard water (170–200 mg/L) means we check the shut-off valves while we have them exposed — a seized shut-off discovered during a future emergency is a serious problem.
Toilet replacement
A toilet upgrade is one of the highest-value handyman tasks per dollar spent. We shut off supply, drain and remove the old toilet, replace the wax ring, set the new toilet, install the supply line, mount the seat and run a full flush cycle test. Low-flow models (4.8 L/flush or dual-flush) are standard under Alberta's building code for new installations — we advise if your chosen model meets the requirement.
Exhaust fan swap
Bathroom exhaust fans in Calgary homes typically have a 10–15 year service life before the motor becomes noticeably loud or the airflow drops below the minimum 50 CFM required by code. A like-for-like swap is a 90-minute job: cap the circuit, remove the old unit, install the new fan in the same housing or expand the housing if upsizing, reconnect wiring and test. Bathroom Air King, Delta Breez and Broan fans are all common brands we install.
Tub and shower re-caulking
Caulk at the tub-to-wall and shower floor-to-wall transitions is the primary water barrier stopping moisture from entering the wall cavity. Calgary's temperature cycling causes more joint movement than milder climates — caulk here fails faster, typically showing cracks or pulling away at 3–7 years. We remove all old caulk mechanically, clean the joint with a mould inhibitor, prime the substrate and apply a mould-resistant silicone in a continuous bead without gaps.
Tile repair and regrouting
Cracked tiles in a shower or around a tub are not just cosmetic — a failed tile lets water behind the substrate. We remove the damaged tile without disturbing adjacent tiles, assess the substrate for moisture damage, re-adhere with appropriate thin-set, regrout to match the existing colour as closely as possible and apply penetrating sealer after 72-hour cure. For widespread grout discolouration, full regrouting of a tub surround is a one-day job.
Painting and accessories
Bathroom painting requires an eggshell or satin sheen for moisture resistance — flat paint is inappropriate in a wet room. We use mould-resistant bathroom paint and apply two coats after filling nail holes and caulking the baseboard-to-floor joint. Towel bars, toilet paper holders, hooks and mirrors are installed with the correct anchors for tile or drywall — a toggle that pulls out behind the tile is a common failure we see and fix.
Bathroom refresh sequence — what gets done in what order
Doing bathroom tasks in the wrong sequence means redoing work. Here is the correct order:
- Step 1: Exhaust fan swap first — requires working overhead without worrying about damaging new fixtures below
- Step 2: Vanity removal and new vanity set — before painting so wall touch-up covers any marks from the swap
- Step 3: Toilet replacement — standalone task, any order works but cleaner to do before painting
- Step 4: Tile repair and regrouting — must cure 72 hours before caulking over grout joints
- Step 5: Painting — after fixtures are in, so cut-ins can be done tight to the new vanity and toilet
- Step 6: Caulking — always last: seals between the painted wall and fixtures with a clean, continuous bead
- Step 7: Accessories (towel bars, TP holder, mirror) — after paint dries so no paint overspray on new hardware

Do you supply the vanity or do I buy it?
You purchase the vanity — we install it. This way you choose the exact style, size and finish without a contractor markup. We disconnect the old unit, remove it, set the new vanity, connect the supply lines and drain, install the faucet if included, seal the perimeter and leave the work area clean. Common sources: IKEA, Home Depot, Wayfair, local plumbing showrooms.
How long does a bathroom refresh take in Calgary?
A full bathroom refresh — vanity, toilet, exhaust fan, re-caulk and paint — typically takes 2 days. Day one covers the larger installations (vanity, toilet, fan); day two covers painting, caulking and accessories once the silicone from day one has cured. Calgary's dry climate (15–25% RH in winter) speeds up silicone and paint cure times significantly.
Can you re-tile a shower or tub surround?
Full shower retiling is outside our scope — that involves waterproofing membrane work that should be done by a certified tile setter. What we do handle: individual cracked or loose tile replacement, regrouting, and re-caulking at all transitions (floor-to-wall, tub-to-wall, corner seams). These repairs address the most common failure points without a full retile.
What's the difference between re-caulking and regrouting a bathroom?
Caulk is the flexible sealant used at movement joints — where the tub meets the wall, floor meets the wall, and inside corners. It flexes with the building and prevents water intrusion at joints that move. Grout fills the static joints between tiles. Calgary's temperature swings cause more joint movement than milder climates, so caulk at transitions fails faster here — typically 3–7 years. Regrouting is needed when grout cracks, crumbles or discolours throughout a tiled area.
Does the exhaust fan swap require an electrician?
A like-for-like exhaust fan replacement — same size opening, existing wiring and duct in place — does not require an electrician in Alberta for a handyman doing the mechanical swap. We cap off the power, swap the fan unit, reconnect the wiring to the same junction and test airflow. If you are adding a new fan where none existed, or rerouting ductwork, that changes the scope and may require an electrician and permit.
