Interior Painting Cost in Calgary (2026)

Painting quotes in Calgary vary widely — for the same room, you can get quotes ranging from $250 to $900. The difference is not always about quality; it is often about what each quote includes and what scope it covers. This guide breaks down actual pricing for common painting jobs and what drives the difference between a touch-up and a full repaint.

Touch-up vs. full repaint: how to choose

This is the most common question before booking a painting job. The deciding factor is usually the age and condition of the existing paint, not the size of the damage:

When touch-ups work

  • The existing paint is less than 2 to 3 years old and has not faded significantly
  • You have the original paint (same batch, not a remixed can from the hardware store)
  • The damage is isolated — a few scuffs, nail holes from picture frames, minor dents
  • The wall finish is flat or matte (flat paint blends better than satin or semi-gloss)

When touch-ups will not look right

  • The existing paint is more than 3 years old — paint fades unevenly and a spot repair will have a noticeably different sheen or tone
  • The paint has a satin or semi-gloss finish — these finishes show sheen differences between old and new paint much more than flat
  • You are using a remixed colour — even with the original formula code, a newly mixed can rarely matches aged paint exactly
  • The damage covers more than about 30% of a single wall — at that point repainting the full wall is more cost-effective and looks better

A common mistake is spending $85 on touch-ups that look obviously patched in normal daylight. When in doubt, ask before booking — we can assess from a photo whether a touch-up will look seamless or whether a full wall repaint is the better approach.

What drives the price higher than the base rate

Wall condition and prep time

Prep work — filling holes, sanding, priming patches — is often the majority of the time on a painting job. A room with 15 nail holes, scuffs and a few dents takes 1.5 hours of prep before the first coat goes on. A room in excellent condition with nothing to fill takes 20 minutes of prep. This is why painting quotes vary so much from one job to the next of the same room size.

Ceiling height

Standard 8-foot ceilings are painted from a standard ladder. Ceilings 9 to 10 feet require an extension ladder and slower work near the top. Cathedral ceilings or vaulted areas over 12 feet may require scaffolding. Any ceiling over 10 feet is quoted higher than the base room rate.

Colour change — light to dark or dark to light

Painting a light colour over a dark wall (or vice versa) requires a tinted primer coat plus two paint coats for full coverage — three coats total rather than the standard two. Two-coat pricing assumes the existing colour and the new colour are in a similar tone range. If you are painting over a feature wall that was previously deep grey or navy blue, expect an additional cost.

Trim, doors and casing

Trim painting is slower than wall painting because it requires careful cutting-in around multiple surfaces, and trim paint (typically semi-gloss) requires more careful application to avoid brush marks. If the trim is a different colour than the walls, it is priced separately per room. Doors are priced per side — painting a door interior and exterior on the same visit is more efficient than separate appointments.

Furniture and contents

Rooms that can be cleared of furniture before the visit allow faster work and a better result — no masking or working around furniture. If furniture needs to be moved to the centre and covered, add time. We do not move heavy pieces that require two people or could be damaged.

What paint should you buy?

For Calgary homes, Benjamin Moore Aura and Sherwin-Williams Emerald are the two consistently reliable premium paints in Alberta. Both are available at dedicated paint stores (not big box stores). Premium paint covers better (often one coat for light colour changes), lasts longer and is easier to touch up later.

Paint finishes for Calgary interiors:

  • Flat/matte — Living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms. Hides imperfections best. Not washable — marks require touch-up rather than wiping.
  • Eggshell — The most versatile finish. Slight sheen, more washable than flat. Good for most rooms including family rooms and children's bedrooms.
  • Satin — Hallways, kitchens. More durable and washable. Shows surface imperfections more than flat.
  • Semi-gloss — Trim, doors, cabinetry. Highly durable and washable. Shows brush marks if not applied carefully.

When you supply the paint, let us know the finish before the visit — preparation steps differ slightly between flat and semi-gloss jobs.

Painting as part of a repair-and-paint visit

The most efficient approach for a room that has both drywall damage and paint that needs refreshing is a combined drywall repair and painting visit. The drywall repair is done first, primed and allowed to dry, then the painting follows. Booking these as a single visit eliminates the need for a return trip to paint over the patched areas and ensures the repair blends seamlessly into the refreshed surface.

This is particularly common in Calgary rental properties during tenant turnover — a single visit handles all the small damage plus the refresh, and the suite is ready faster.
