The WD-40 mistake
WD-40 is not a lubricant — it is a water displacer and penetrating solvent (the WD stands for Water Displacement). Applying WD-40 to garage door springs and hinges in Calgary creates two problems:
- WD-40 strips away existing lubricant and leaves a solvent residue that becomes tacky at low temperatures
- The residue attracts dust and metal particles from the spring coils, forming a gritty paste that increases friction
Use WD-40 Specialist products (white lithium grease, garage door lubricant, silicone spray) — these are different formulations from standard WD-40 and are appropriate for garage door lubrication. The standard red-and-yellow can of original WD-40 is not.
Safety sensors: the most common Calgary garage door complaint
The infrared beam sensors at the bottom of the garage door tracks are the most frequent cause of a garage door that "reverses immediately when closing." The sensors detect a beam interruption (a person, pet, or object in the way) and reverse the door as a safety measure. Common Calgary causes of sensor misalignment:
- Snow or ice kicked up by the car into the sensor housing — this is the most common winter cause
- A cobweb across the beam path in summer
- The sensor mounting bracket bumped out of alignment
- Direct sunlight hitting the receiving sensor (east- or west-facing garage doors in early morning or late afternoon)
Sensor alignment fix: the sensors have green (receiving) and amber (sending) LED indicators. Both should be solid (not blinking). If either is blinking, the beam is not connecting. Loosen the mounting wing nut, adjust the sensor direction until the LED goes solid, then retighten. Wipe the sensor faces with a dry cloth before testing.
