How dryer vent fires happen

A dryer works by heating air, blowing it through the drum, and exhausting the hot, humid air out through the duct to the exterior. Lint — fine fibres from clothing — is highly flammable. The lint trap catches a fraction of it; the rest passes into the duct and accumulates, particularly at bends and at the exterior cap.

As the duct fills with lint, airflow decreases. The dryer runs longer and hotter to compensate. Heat build-up in the restricted duct eventually ignites the accumulated lint — a dryer duct fire typically starts inside the wall or ceiling cavity where the duct runs, not at the dryer itself, which is why it is often undetected until the fire is established.

The Calgary-specific factor: dry air (15 to 30% RH in winter) produces dryer lint that is lighter and carries further through the duct before settling. Lint accumulates at the first significant bend or at the exterior cap rather than near the dryer — a spot that lint trap inspection misses entirely.

Alberta code: duct material requirements

If your Calgary home has white plastic or silvery foil accordion flex duct connecting the dryer to the wall or running through the wall cavity, it should be replaced with smooth rigid metal before the next cleaning. Many older Calgary homes (1990s and earlier) were installed with plastic or accordion duct — this is the highest-priority dryer safety upgrade.

Dryer vent length limits

The Alberta Building Code (following NBC requirements) and most dryer manufacturers specify a maximum duct length based on 4-inch diameter smooth metal duct:

• Maximum straight run: approximately 7.5 metres (25 feet)
• Each 90-degree elbow subtracts 2.4 metres (8 feet) of equivalent length
• Each 45-degree elbow subtracts 1.2 metres (4 feet) of equivalent length

Calgary bungalows with laundry in the basement frequently have duct runs that exceed this limit — laundry in a back corner of the basement, exterior cap on the far side of the house, route through two walls and around two corners. If your dryer takes consistently long to dry or the clothes are still damp after a full cycle, measure your duct run against these limits before replacing the dryer.

What the cleaning involves

Professional dryer vent cleaning uses a rotary brush system (long flexible rod with a spinning brush head) that passes through the full duct length from either the dryer end or the exterior cap. The brush breaks up the lint compaction, and a vacuum captures the loosened lint. The exterior cap flap and damper are also checked — a stuck or closed cap creates the same restriction as a fully blocked duct and is a very common finding in Calgary properties where cottonwood seeds or bird nesting has blocked the cap.
