Attic Insulation Calgary: R-Values, Blown-In vs. Batt, and What a Handyman Can Do

The Alberta Building Code (2019) sets R-40 (RSI 7.0) as the minimum for attic insulation in Climate Zone 7. Most Calgary homes built before 1990 have R-12 to R-20 — well below the current minimum and dramatically below what is cost-effective given Calgary's heating load.

Vapour barrier placement: a common Calgary mistake

In cold climates like Calgary, the vapour barrier (6-mil polyethylene) belongs on the warm side of the insulation assembly — which in a ceiling/attic assembly means directly under the drywall, facing into the heated space. This barrier was installed when the house was built.

The critical mistake to avoid: do not lay a new poly sheet on top of the existing attic insulation or on the attic floor. A poly layer in the middle of the insulation assembly or on the cold side traps moisture between the insulation layers. In Calgary winters, this trapped moisture freezes, accumulates, and creates mould and structural damage when it thaws in spring. The attic above the insulation must remain able to dry to the outside via soffit-to-ridge ventilation.

Air sealing: the step most homeowners skip

Adding more insulation on top of poor air sealing is like putting extra blankets over a sleeping bag with a hole in it. Heat and moisture move primarily through air movement (convection), not just conduction — which is what R-value measures. Air sealing addresses the gaps that R-value cannot fix.

The critical air sealing locations in a Calgary home before insulating:

  • Top plates: The gap between the ceiling drywall and the top of interior walls, where the wall cavity connects directly to the attic. Seal with acoustical caulk or expanding foam.
  • Pot lights / recessed lights: Standard pot lights (not IC-rated) are open cavities that dump warm air directly into the attic. Either replace with sealed LED downlights or build a rigid insulation box over each one, sealed at the ceiling level.
  • Plumbing and electrical penetrations: Any pipe or wire that passes through the top plate or ceiling is an air pathway. Seal with fire-rated acoustical sealant (not standard silicone, which is not appropriate for penetrations near heated air).

  • Chimney chase: Calgary homes with central fireplaces have a large open chimney shaft that rises through the attic. This requires fire-rated blocking (sheet metal) sealed with fire-rated caulk — standard foam cannot be used within 50 mm of a masonry chimney.

Ice dams: the symptom of under-insulated attics

Ice dams form along Calgary roof eaves in winter when heat from an under-insulated attic warms the roof deck above the exterior walls, melting snow. The meltwater runs down the roof and refreezes at the cold eaves (which sit over unheated space — the soffit area). The resulting ice dam backs water up under the shingles, causing leaks into the ceiling below.

Calgary's Chinook events make ice damming particularly severe: a Chinook can raise temperatures from -25°C to +10°C within hours, then return to -20°C the following day. This repeated freeze-thaw cycle at the roof edge is highly destructive when attic heat contributes to uneven snow melt.

Ice melt cables (heat tape along the eaves) treat the symptom. The permanent fix is always attic air sealing + insulation upgrade so the roof deck temperature stays consistently below freezing during winter. A well-insulated, well-ventilated Calgary attic should show no differential snow melt pattern — the roof should be uniformly snow-covered.

Attic ventilation: required even with high insulation

Adding insulation without maintaining proper attic ventilation creates moisture problems in Calgary. The Alberta Building Code requires a minimum 1:300 ratio of net ventilation area to attic floor area, split between low (soffit) and high (ridge or gable) ventilation.

When adding blown-in insulation, keep the ventilation baffles (cardboard or rigid foam channels along the rafters) clear. Blown-in insulation should not block soffit vents. Install baffles before blowing in insulation if the existing ones are inadequate or absent.
