TV Wall Mount Types in Calgary: Fixed vs. Tilt vs. Full-Motion, VESA Sizing, and What Installation Costs

The right TV mount depends on three things: where the TV is positioned relative to where you sit, whether studs are available at the right location, and how much of the wall the mount can occupy. Choosing the wrong mount type — or using the wrong anchors — means either a suboptimal viewing experience or a TV on the floor. Here is the complete guide.

Stud vs. anchor: the weight thresholds

  • Under 25 kg total (TV + mount): quality toggle anchors (SnapToggle, TOGGLER) rated for the load are acceptable in 12.7mm drywall. Always use two anchors minimum on each vertical side of the mount plate.
  • 25–50 kg total: stud mounting strongly preferred. If studs do not align with mount bolt holes, use a backing plate spanning two studs, then attach the mount to the backing plate.
  • Over 50 kg total: stud mounting required. Full-motion mounts with a 65\"+ TV typically fall in this range at full arm extension — the dynamic load exceeds static weight ratings.
  • Never use plastic expansion anchors for any TV mount. Pull-out force under dynamic load is far below their static rating — a bump on the TV can pull them from the wall.

Cable management options

  • Surface raceway: paintable plastic channel strips attached to the wall — quickest, no wall work, visible but tidy
  • In-wall low-voltage kit: flat cable runs inside the drywall cavity between two wall plates — clean result, requires two small cuts in the drywall
  • In-wall conduit with new outlet: electrician installs an outlet at TV height, low-voltage cables run in conduit — cleanest result, highest cost
