Running Toilet in Calgary: Why It Runs, What It Costs You, and What the Repair Involves

A running toilet in a Calgary home wastes 750 to 2,800 litres of water per day — between $57 and $170 per month at Calgary Water's combined water and wastewater rate. The repair is almost always a simple tank component ($8 to $35 in parts), and the diagnosis is a two-step process that takes five minutes. Here is how to identify which component has failed and what it costs to have it repaired.

Calgary hard water and flapper failure

Calgary's moderately hard water (170 to 200 mg/L total dissolved solids) causes mineral scale to build up on toilet flapper seats over time. The scale creates an uneven seating surface that the flapper cannot seal against. This is a common reason for a running toilet in Calgary homes that appear to have new flappers — the flapper itself is fine, but the valve seat it closes against has scale deposits.

Fix: turn off the water supply (angle stop under the toilet), flush to empty the tank, and clean the flapper seat with white vinegar and a scrubbing pad. Mineral deposits will dissolve in the acidic vinegar solution. Allow to dry, turn the water back on, and test. If this does not stop the running, replace the flapper.
