Repair vs. replace: the quick decision guide
The decision is mostly about faucet age and where the leak originates:
| Situation | Repair or replace? | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Faucet under 5 years old, drip from spout | Repair | Cartridge or washer replacement — $10–$25 in parts |
| Faucet 5–10 years old, drip from spout | Either | Parts available; weigh repair cost against new faucet price |
| Faucet over 10 years old, any leak | Replace | Parts may be unavailable; labour cost similar either way |
| Leak from base or handles | Replace | Indicates internal corrosion; repair rarely holds long-term |
| Low pressure in kitchen faucet | Repair first | Clean or replace aerator — $5 part, 5-minute job |
| Handle loose or difficult to turn | Replace | Worn cartridge; if faucet is old, replace the whole unit |
| Visible corrosion or pitting on body | Replace | Cosmetic and structural degradation — seal integrity compromised |
Calgary water and faucet longevity
Calgary's municipal water supply comes primarily from the Bow and Elbow Rivers and is classified as moderately hard — roughly 150 to 180 mg/L of calcium carbonate. This is not hard enough to cause serious scaling in most home applications, but it does accumulate inside valve cartridges over time, particularly in areas with lower water flow like bathroom faucets used only intermittently.
The accumulation hardens the cartridge mechanism over years, making the handle increasingly stiff to turn. A faucet that requires significant force to turn on or off usually has a cartridge that is either mineral-fouled or worn. This is repairable with cartridge replacement for newer faucets; on older models the cartridge may no longer be available.
Faucet brands that handle Calgary water well:
- Moen — Uses proprietary Duralast cartridges rated for 500,000 cycles. Replacement cartridges are widely available and often covered under Moen's lifetime warranty. Most reliable option for Calgary conditions.
- Delta — Ball-type mechanism on kitchen faucets; ceramic disc on bathroom. Calgary-available at most hardware stores. Good warranty coverage.
- Kohler — Premium build quality, excellent finish durability. Parts available at specialty plumbing suppliers. Higher price point but longer life.
- Price Pfister (Pfister) — Solid mid-range option. Widely available at big box stores in Calgary. Parts availability is good for newer models.
Brands to avoid: generic imported faucets with no brand name, or budget lines where replacement cartridges are not sold separately. When the cartridge fails in 2 to 3 years, the faucet is landfill.
What a faucet swap involves
A standard faucet replacement is not complicated, but it has a few steps where things can go wrong:
- Shut off the water supply — Under-sink shut-off valves in Calgary homes built before 1990 are often original and have never been turned in decades. Corroded or seized valves sometimes need replacement before the faucet work can begin. We assess this before starting and flag it if the shut-off looks problematic.
- Disconnect supply lines — Braided stainless supply lines are straightforward. Older corrugated copper lines are brittle and can crack during removal; they are replaced with new braided lines as part of the installation.
- Remove the old faucet — Under-sink access is tight on most Calgary vanities. The mounting nuts on older faucets corrode in place and require a basin wrench to break loose in a confined space.
- Install the new faucet — Mount to the sink, connect supply lines, set the handle stops, check alignment.
- Restore water and check for leaks — Run the faucet fully hot and fully cold, check all connections under the sink for any drips. Check the aerator flow rate and clean it if the flow is low.

What a handyman can do vs. what needs a licensed plumber
Most faucet work is in handyman scope — fixture replacement, cartridge swaps, supply line connections. Licensed plumbers are required for:
- Installing a new shower valve where no valve existed (requires opening the wall and connecting to the rough-in pipes)
- Moving supply lines to a new location
- Adding a new sink or fixture where no water supply currently exists
- Any work involving the main water shut-off or meter
When there is uncertainty about which scope a job falls into, describe the situation before booking — we can tell you immediately whether it is handyman-appropriate or requires a licensed plumber.
What to have ready before the handyman arrives
- The new faucet unboxed and accessible — including all supplied hardware, supply lines and installation instructions
- The location of the under-sink shut-off valves identified (open the cabinet and point them out if needed)
- Under-sink cabinet cleared so there is room to work
- If replacing a bathroom faucet: know whether it is a single-hole, 3-hole centre-set, or 3-hole widespread — the new faucet must match the existing sink holes
Faucet dripping or due for replacement?
Send a photo of the existing faucet and the new one if you have it. We can usually quote from photos — most faucet swaps are booked within 1–2 days.
