Shower Door & Enclosure Installation in Calgary: Frameless vs. Semi-Framed, Hard Water, and What It Costs

Replacing a shower curtain with a glass door changes a bathroom more than almost any other single upgrade. The decision between framed, semi-framed, and frameless comes down to budget and how much hardware you want to see. In Calgary, the hard water question — how fast the glass will stain and what to do about it — is worth thinking through before you buy.

Framed vs. semi-framed vs. frameless: a real comparison

TypeGlass thicknessInstall difficultyMaintenance
Framed4–6mmEasiestTrack cleaning required; frame hides mineral buildup
Semi-framed6–8mmModerateLess track; silicone at frame-wall joints
Frameless10mm (3/8")HardestSilicone only; hard water visible on glass

The aesthetic difference is significant: frameless doors emphasize the tile work and make a shower feel larger. But they are also the highest-maintenance option in a hard-water city like Calgary, because every water drop that dries on the glass is visible without a frame to redirect attention.

The Calgary hard water problem

Calgary's water hardness averages around 170 to 200 mg/L (10 to 12 grains per gallon). This is classified as "hard" on the standard water hardness scale. Every time water evaporates from your shower glass, the dissolved minerals stay behind — building up as a white haze over time. On frameless glass, this is immediately visible. On framed glass, the track conceals some of it, and the frame channels water away.

The only effective way to prevent hard water buildup is to prevent water from drying on the glass. Two strategies:

  1. Squeegee after every shower — takes 15 seconds, removes 90% of the water before it can dry
  2. Apply a glass water repellent coating (Rain-X, EnduroShield, or CRL Clearshield) — causes water to bead and run off before it can dry. Apply at installation, reapply annually. Best used in combination with squeegeeing.

Installation process

The installation sequence for a shower door or enclosure on an existing tile surround:

  1. Measure the opening dimensions (width at top, middle, and bottom — tile surrounds are rarely perfectly square)
  2. Order or purchase the door unit sized to the actual opening — note the smallest measurement for the critical dimension
  3. Mark the wall channel positions with a level (not by following the tile grout lines, which may drift)
  4. Drill into the tile at channel anchor points using a tile bit at low speed — no hammer drill in tile
  5. Mount the wall channels or hinge mounting plates; anchor with appropriate anchors for tile/drywall or tile/stud
  6. Hang the door; adjust hinges for level and gap consistency
  7. Install the bottom sweep and any magnetic door seals
  8. Apply silicone at all wall contacts (not at the door-to-sweep gap, which must be adjustable)
  9. Apply glass water repellent coating after silicone cures (24 hours)

What affects installation price

The main variables that add to the base installation price:

  • Out-of-square opening: if the tub deck or shower floor is not level (common in older Calgary homes where the subfloor has settled), shims and adjustments add time
  • Tile type at drill points: porcelain is harder to drill cleanly than ceramic; natural stone requires diamond-tipped bits and even slower speeds
  • Header (top track): some enclosures require a top header for rigidity — adds installation steps and a ceiling anchor drill
  • Removal of old door: removing and disposing of an existing framed enclosure adds 30 to 45 minutes
