Master caulk selection table
| Application | Recommended caulk | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Exterior windows and doors | Siliconized acrylic (exterior grade) | Paintable; rated to -30°C; apply May–Sept in Calgary |
| Exterior metal or PVC window frames | 100% silicone | Maximum flexibility; not paintable — match caulk colour to frame |
| Bathtub/shower surround joint | 100% silicone or tub-and-tile | Must flex with tub load; silicone is the only option in wet immersion |
| Shower floor-to-wall joint | 100% silicone | High movement joint — do not use grout here |
| Kitchen sink perimeter | 100% silicone (clear) | Wet immersion; clear is most versatile |
| Interior trim-to-wall (paintable) | Siliconized acrylic (interior) | Paint after 1 hour; smooth easily with wet finger |
| Baseboard-to-floor gap | Siliconized acrylic (interior) | Paintable; flexible enough for floor seasonal movement |
| Exterior masonry joints or large gaps | Polyurethane (Sikaflex, Tremco) | Best for large movement joints; solvent cleanup |
| Foundation penetrations, large utility gaps | Expanding polyurethane foam | Fill large voids before final caulk; not a finish product on its own |
| Duct and attic air sealing | Acoustic sealant (Tremco) or polyurethane | Specifically for air barrier continuity — not regular caulk |

Calgary application timing
Exterior caulk must be applied and cure above 5°C. Calgary's reliable application window: May through September. October applications are possible on warm days but risk overnight frost before curing completes.
Interior caulk (trim, baseboard, bathroom) can be applied year-round regardless of outdoor temperature — as long as the indoor temperature is above 5°C, which all heated Calgary homes maintain.
