Squeaky Floor Fix in Calgary: Why Alberta Dry Air Makes Floors Squeak, How to Find the Source, and What Repairs Cost

Most Calgary floor squeaks are at their worst in January and February and reduce significantly by June — because wood shrinks as indoor humidity drops to 15–25% RH in winter and re-expands as summer humidity returns. Understanding whether your squeak is seasonal or structural, and whether it is in the subfloor or finish floor, determines which repair method works.

Why Calgary floors squeak more than most cities

Calgary's annual indoor humidity swing is extreme: 15–25% RH in February, 50–60% RH in July. Wood flooring and subfloor panels absorb and release moisture with the seasons, expanding and contracting by 1–3mm per metre of width across the grain. Over years of cycling, this movement loosens fasteners, opens glue lines between subfloor panels and joists, and creates small gaps between finish floor boards.

A squeak that appears in October and disappears in May is almost always seasonal movement — the floor is tight in summer and loose in winter. The repair options range from a temporary friction reducer (graphite) to a permanent structural fix (screw and adhesive).
