Light Fixture & Ceiling Fan Installation in Calgary: What a Handyman Can Do and What It Costs

Swapping a light fixture or installing a ceiling fan is one of the most visually impactful upgrades in a Calgary home and one of the most misunderstood in terms of who needs to do it. Here is the clear line between handyman scope and licensed electrician scope, the fan junction box issue that causes most ceiling fan installation problems, and what the job costs.

Ceiling fans: the junction box issue

The most common ceiling fan installation mistake — and the cause of most wobbly, vibrating, or eventually-falling ceiling fans — is hanging a fan from a standard light fixture junction box.

A ceiling light fixture box is designed for static loads: the fixture hangs there and does not move. The total dynamic load rating of a standard light box is typically 35 to 50 lbs static. A ceiling fan weighs 10 to 25 lbs on its own — but the rotating mass creates centrifugal and gyroscopic forces that are multiples of the static weight. Over time, these forces work the mounting screws loose, cause the box to deform, and eventually cause the fan to detach from the ceiling.

A fan-rated junction box is either:

  • Bolted directly to a ceiling joist (ideal, but requires the fan to be located at or near the joist)
  • Installed with a fan-rated brace kit — a metal brace with a central fan box that expands to grip the joists on either side of the ceiling opening. The brace installs from below without attic access, through the existing 4-inch hole. Takes about 15 minutes to install and is rated for fans up to 70 lbs.

Before every ceiling fan installation, the existing junction box should be assessed. If there is any doubt about the rating, install a fan-rated brace. The cost of the brace ($25 to $35) is trivial relative to the damage a falling ceiling fan can cause.

Pot light replacement

Pot light (recessed light) replacement is typically the simplest fixture swap — the housing is already in the ceiling, and only the trim ring and bulb assembly need to change. Most Calgary pot lights from 2005 onward use the E26 or GU10 base, and direct replacement LED trim kits are available that clip into the existing housing.

Older pot lights in Calgary homes built before 2000 may use incandescent-only housings that are not rated for LED bulbs due to the different thermal profile. If changing from incandescent to LED pot light, confirm the housing is IC-rated (insulation contact) and rated for LED-dimmable use.

Chandelier and heavy fixture installation

Chandeliers over 15 kg require the same fan-rated brace or joist-anchoring approach as ceiling fans. The visual drama of a chandelier is accompanied by real structural load. Confirm the ceiling box before purchasing a chandelier — many Calgary homeowners discover the light box cannot support the chandelier they bought after the chandeliers is already out of the box.
