Calgary's humidity problem and wood floors
Hardwood flooring manufacturers design their products for installation environments between 40 and 60% relative humidity. In a Calgary home in January without whole-home humidification, indoor RH regularly drops to 20 to 25% when the furnace runs continuously. At this humidity level, hardwood planks lose moisture and contract — their width shrinks by 1 to 3% depending on species and board width. Wide-plank floors (over 10 cm) show more movement than narrow strip flooring.
The result is visible gaps between boards in winter. These are not a defect and do not indicate floor failure — they are a predictable response to a dry environment. They typically close again in summer when Calgary's humidity rises. However:
- If the gaps are very wide (over 4mm), debris and pet hair accumulates in them and is difficult to clean
- Repeated severe contraction and expansion cycles over many years can cause finish cracking at the board edges
- A whole-home humidifier that maintains 40 to 45% RH eliminates the seasonal movement
Diagnosing the problem type
| Problem | Common cause in Calgary | Repair |
|---|---|---|
| Gaps between boards (winter) | Low humidity — boards contracting | Humidification; filler if persistent |
| Squeaking (one spot) | Loose subfloor or board movement | Screw from below or face-nail |
| Squeaking (multiple spots) | Subfloor issue, older nail-down | Subfloor reinforcement or re-nail |
| Surface scratches | Pet claws, furniture, grit | Touch-up marker, wax, or spot refinish |
| Cupping (edges raised) | Moisture from below (crawl space) | Address moisture source first |
| Cracked board | Physical impact, deep scratch | Board replacement |
| Damaged laminate plank | Water intrusion, impact | Plank replacement |
Squeaky floor diagnosis and repair
A squeaky floor is the sound of two surfaces rubbing against each other under foot load. The surfaces can be:
- Hardwood plank against adjacent plank — the most common source; boards rub side-to-side as the floor flexes. Fix: inject powdered graphite between boards at the squeak location, or drive a finish nail at a slight angle to pull the boards together.
- Hardwood plank against subfloor — the plank is not firmly bonded or nailed to the subfloor below. Fix from below: drive a drywall screw through the subfloor into the bottom of the floor board to draw it down tight. This requires clear access from below.
- Subfloor against joist — the subfloor panel is lifting slightly off the joist. Fix: drive screws from below into the joist to pull the subfloor back down, or apply construction adhesive to the top of the joist at the squeak location (messy but effective if access allows).
Laminate floor plank replacement
Floating laminate floors (the most common installation in Calgary homes from 2000 onward) can have individual planks replaced if the damage is in the field of the floor (not against the wall). The process involves removing the baseboards on the nearest wall, clicking apart the floating planks from the wall to the damaged plank, replacing the damaged plank, and reinstalling the planks in reverse order.
The challenge is matching the replacement plank to the existing floor — laminate colours and emboss patterns change between production batches. If leftover planks from the original installation were saved, use those. If not, bring a plank sample to any Calgary flooring store and look for a close match.
