Furniture Assembly Cost in Calgary (2026)

Furniture assembly is one of the most consistent handyman requests in Calgary — driven by IKEA purchases, move-ins across the city's fast-growing communities and the endless parade of flat-pack beds, desks and wardrobes that arrive in cardboard boxes. Here is what it costs, what makes it more or less expensive and how to get a fair quote.

Typical price ranges in Calgary (2026)

Furniture assembly pricing in Calgary generally follows a per-item model, with bundled rates for multiple pieces assembled in a single visit:

Item typeStarting priceTypical time
Single item (bed frame, desk, bookshelf)From $6530–60 min
Wardrobe / PAX systemFrom $9590–120 min
Multi-item visit (3+ pieces)From $1452–3 hrs
Wall anchoring (per item)Included+10 min/item
Cardboard disposalOn requestIncluded on request

The most cost-effective approach is to batch all the assembly into one visit. The minimum trip charge applies regardless of how many pieces you have — covering everything in a single session typically costs 30 to 40 percent less than two separate bookings.

What affects the price

Item complexity

A simple IKEA MALM bed frame has about 35 parts and goes together in under 40 minutes. An IKEA PAX wardrobe with internal fittings, doors, soft-close hinges and drawer runners can have 200+ parts and take 90 to 120 minutes per wardrobe unit. A corner wardrobe system with a bridge unit is a half-day job. The instruction booklet page count is a reasonable proxy for complexity.

Piece count

Each additional piece adds time. Three separate items in a bedroom — a bed frame, a dresser and a bedside table — take roughly the same time as one PAX wardrobe. Bundled rates for multi-item visits reflect this: it is more efficient to work through multiple items in one location without drive time between them.

Wall anchoring requirements

Bookshelves, tall dressers, wardrobes and any freestanding item taller than 30 inches should be anchored to the wall against the risk of tipping. Wall anchoring is included in the assembly price. The process adds about 10 minutes per item and requires a drill and the appropriate anchors for the wall type. For drywall, stud anchoring is preferred; for plaster, toggle bolts are used.

This is not optional for children's rooms. Furniture tip-over accidents are one of the most common household injuries for children under 6. Any wardrobe, dresser or tall bookshelf in a child's room should be anchored regardless of whether the item comes with an anti-tip strap.

Pre-assembly condition

Furniture that is already partially assembled — someone started and stopped — or furniture that has been incorrectly assembled and needs to be disassembled before starting properly takes longer than a clean build from the box. If you started and realized you were in over your head, that is fine — just mention it when requesting a quote so the time estimate is accurate.

IKEA specifically in Calgary

IKEA furniture accounts for the majority of furniture assembly requests in Calgary, particularly in new-build communities like Mahogany, Auburn Bay, Evanston and Airdrie where move-in assembly is common. A few IKEA-specific notes:

  • PAX wardrobe systems — the most complex and time-consuming IKEA item. A single PAX frame with doors takes about 90 minutes. A two-unit corner system with internal organization takes 3 to 4 hours. Confirm the full configuration when requesting a quote.
  • KALLAX shelving — straightforward assembly, about 30–45 minutes for a 2×4 unit. Can be heavy and unwieldy to flip during assembly — a second person makes it much faster.
  • HEMNES and MALM dressers — 45 to 60 minutes each. The drawer runners require careful alignment; rushing this step causes drawers that stick or pull out unevenly.
  • Beds — IKEA bed frames range from simple slat beds (30 minutes) to upholstered storage beds (60–90 minutes). Sultan and LURÖY slat bases are included in most bed assembly quotes.
  • Missing hardware — IKEA packages hardware in small numbered bags. Missing a bag means a trip back to IKEA or the IKEA website's spare parts service. Confirm all bags are present before the handyman arrives.

Non-IKEA brands in Calgary

Canadian Tire, JYSK, Structube, EQ3, Article and West Elm all sell flat-pack furniture that is regularly assembled in Calgary homes. The quality of instructions and parts fit varies significantly by brand:

  • Article and EQ3 — generally well-made with clear instructions. Assembly time is similar to IKEA for equivalent items.
  • JYSK — instruction quality varies by product line. Some items have confusing diagrams; budget extra time for first-time builds.
  • Structube — mid-range quality. Sectional sofas can have many parts and take 60–90 minutes.
  • Canadian Tire (Canmore, Traverse, etc.) — instruction quality varies widely. The cheapest items sometimes have tolerance issues where parts do not align cleanly without adjustment.
  • Costco office furniture and storage — typically well-made but heavy. Large Costco shelving units may require two people to safely assemble and position.

What to prepare before the handyman arrives

A well-prepared assembly job goes significantly faster:

  • Move boxes to the room where the item will live — do not leave them in the garage or front door if the bedroom is where it needs to be built
  • Confirm all boxes are present and accounted for — large wardrobe systems often ship in multiple boxes
  • Remove existing furniture from the assembly area — 6 square feet of clear floor space minimum, 10 square feet for wardrobes
  • Open the top flap of the box but leave the parts inside — the handyman will unbox and sort hardware as part of the process
  • Know where you want the item positioned in the room — wardrobe anchoring placement is final once the item is against the wall and anchored

Cardboard and packaging disposal

IKEA and most flat-pack brands generate a significant amount of cardboard. A full bedroom set can produce 8 to 12 large cardboard panels plus packing material. Breaking this down and taking it out to recycling adds time but is included on request. If your building has a recycling room that is accessible, this is the cleanest approach. If you are in a house, the City of Calgary's blue cart accepts flattened cardboard.

Furniture assembly vs. DIY in Calgary

Most IKEA furniture can technically be assembled by one person. The question is not whether you can — it is whether the time, effort and risk of a mistake is worth the cost of hiring someone.

The hidden cost of DIY furniture assembly is the value of your time. A PAX wardrobe that a handyman builds in 90 minutes might take a first-time builder 3 to 4 hours, including time spent re-reading instructions, correcting misaligned drawer runners and fighting with doors that will not close evenly. If your weekend afternoon is worth $40 an hour to you, the math often favours booking a handyman — particularly for complex items.

The risk of mistakes is also real. Assembling a large wardrobe in the wrong order — for instance, inserting drawer runners before the back panel — can require full disassembly to correct. Incorrectly seated soft-close hinges eventually strip the cam lock fittings. Forcing cam locks to turn after the cams are already tight snaps the cam fitting in the panel, which is not repairable.

Getting a quote for furniture assembly in Calgary

The fastest way to get an accurate quote is to send a list of everything that needs assembling: brand, item name and a rough description of the room. Photos of boxes help for non-standard items. Most quotes for furniture assembly can be confirmed in a single exchange and the job scheduled within 1 to 2 days.

Batching is always more cost-effective than individual bookings. If you have four rooms of furniture arriving from a move, book one 3-to-4-hour visit and cover everything in a day.
