Drywall Texture Matching in Calgary: Orange Peel, Knockdown and Popcorn — How Professionals Match Existing Texture

A drywall patch that blends invisibly into the surrounding wall requires two things: a flush surface and a matched texture. The flush surface is a skill — but the texture match is why homeowners hire professionals. A mismatched orange peel or knockdown texture visible across a room is worse than the original hole, and it is very difficult to fix without repainting the entire wall.

Orange peel texture: the most common Calgary match

Orange peel is the default wall and ceiling texture in most Calgary homes built after 1990. The name describes the appearance — small, rounded bumps like the surface of citrus peel. There are three grades (fine, medium, and heavy) depending on the nozzle size, dilution, and pressure used during original application.

Professional matching process:

  1. Complete the patch (tape, mud, sand to flush)
  2. Prime the patched area with PVA drywall primer
  3. Mix joint compound with water to a smooth, pourable consistency (similar to potato soup)
  4. Test-spray on a piece of drywall or cardboard and compare to the existing wall texture from 1.5m away
  5. Adjust nozzle distance (30-60cm), pressure (25-40 PSI), and dilution until test matches existing
  6. Apply texture to the repair area and blend into the surrounding texture at the edges
  7. Prime and paint the full wall (not just the patch) for a seamless sheen result

Knockdown texture matching

Knockdown is applied by spraying a heavy orange peel layer, then partially flattening the peaks with a drywall knife (the "knockdown") while the mud is still wet. The timing of the knockdown is critical — too early and it smears, too late and the texture has dried into fixed peaks. Calgary's low RH accelerates drying, which gives a shorter working window than humid climates.

Aerosol knockdown cans exist but are unreliable for matching existing texture — the pattern size is fixed and may not match the original spray pattern. Professional knockdown matching uses a hopper and a drywall knife, and requires calibration to the existing texture pattern before the patch is committed.

Popcorn ceiling repair in Calgary

Calgary homes from the 1960s-1980s have popcorn (acoustic) ceilings — a sprayed-on texture containing vermiculite or styrofoam beads. Important note: popcorn ceilings applied before 1980 in Calgary may contain asbestos in the textured layer. Before any repair or removal, test the material with an asbestos test kit (available at hardware stores) or hire an asbestos abatement assessor.

For popcorn ceilings confirmed asbestos-free: aerosol popcorn ceiling texture cans are available and workable for small repairs. Hold 45-60cm from the ceiling and build up in light layers, blending at the edges. The key challenge is that existing popcorn has yellowed or been painted over years of use, and new white texture is noticeably brighter — full ceiling repainting is usually required for a seamless result.
