Closet Organizer Installation in Calgary: IKEA PAX, Custom Systems, and What It Costs

Walk-in closets in Calgary homes built after 2000 are often just open space with a rod and one shelf — functional but wasteful of the available cubic footage. Here is what the main closet system options involve in Calgary, why IKEA PAX needs more than the included tip-over strap, and what professional installation costs by system type.

IKEA PAX: what professional installation actually involves

PAX is the most popular closet system in Calgary homes — the price point and variety of finishes, door options and interior fittings are hard to beat. What the installation involves beyond what IKEA implies:

  1. Plan before purchasing. PAX frames come in 3 standard widths (50, 75, 100 cm) and 3 heights (201, 226, 236 cm). Calgary walk-in closet ceiling heights vary — measure carefully. The 201 cm frame leaves a gap at the top in 9-ft rooms that must be filled or accounted for visually.
  2. Locate wall studs before assembly. The frames will be anchored to the wall; knowing where the studs are before the units are assembled and in position avoids having to move them after.
  3. Assemble the frames. PAX frames self-assemble with cam fasteners and screws. This is straightforward but time-consuming — each frame takes 20 to 30 minutes.
  4. Level and plumb on site. Calgary walk-in closet floors are rarely perfectly level. PAX frames have adjustable feet; setting the frames plumb to the wall is more important than having them perfectly level for door-hanging purposes.
  5. Anchor into studs. Through the top rail of each frame, lag bolts go into the wall studs. This is the step IKEA's instructions handle with a strap to one drywall screw — that is inadequate for a loaded wardrobe in a household with children.
  6. Install doors. Swing doors on hinges, or sliding doors in the track. Hinge adjustment on PAX doors takes more time than IKEA implies — 3 adjustment points per hinge, and doors often need multiple passes to align properly.
  7. Install interior fittings — shelves, drawer units, hanging rails, shoe racks, pull-out trays. These are the quickest part once the frames are anchored.

Maximizing a small Calgary reach-in closet

Most Calgary homes built before 1990 have reach-in closets 36 to 48 inches wide. The three highest-return upgrades:

  1. Double-hang the short section — split the rod space into a long hang section (for dresses, suits, shirts on hangers) and a double-hang section (two rods, upper and lower, for folded shirts, pants and short items). Doubles usable hanging space in the short section.
  2. Shoe shelving at floor level — replacing the floor-level shoe pile with angled shoe shelves reclaims 12 to 18 inches of vertical space below the hanging garments.
  3. Extra shelf above top shelf — most reach-in closets have 12 to 18 inches of space above the top shelf before the ceiling. A second shelf in this space holds seasonal items, bags, or boxes.
